What it its
ITER
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a global collaborative nuclear fusion experiment aimed at achieving the minimum fusion efficiency required for commercial viability.
It is the largest international research and development project in history, with participation from 34 countries, including the United States, Russia, the European Union (28 countries), China, India, Japan, and South Korea.
ITER is an international collaborative research project
aimed at developing nuclear fusion technology
to generate unlimited and clean energy.
Assembly Tools
  • Sector sub
    assembly tools
This tool, standing six stories high and weighing 800 tons, securely holds the vacuum vessel sector in place while precisely installing thermal shielding panels and two toroidal field coils using rotating arms. Actuators adjust positioning with an accuracy of 1.5mm and provide six degrees of freedom for fine-tuned adjustments. This operation is performed a total of nine times. It has been procured and is currently in operation in Korea.
  • Upending
    tool
Used to tilt the vacuum vessel sector (440 tons) and the toroidal field coil (360 tons) from a horizontal to a vertical position for installation into the sector sub-assembly tool. This tilting operation is performed in coordination with an overhead crane. It has been procured and is currently in operation in Korea.
  • In-pit
    assembly tool
Comprising a central column and nine radial beams, this tool is used to securely align and support the vacuum vessel sectors inside the tokamak pit. The central column is anchored to the tokamak building foundation, while the radial beams support the space between the concrete bioshield. Designed to withstand up to 5,400 tons, it has been procured and is currently in operation in Korea.
  • Cryostat installation
    & alignment tools
These are specially designed transportation and lifting tools for installing each cryostat section (base, lower cylinder, upper cylinder, and top lid). After installation, they are aligned with the overall tokamak coordinate system using hydraulic jacks. Procured by the ITER organization, some sections have been in operation since 2020.
